Abstract EN

This study was conducted to identify the administrative and technical competencies that should be available by principals in Najran schools, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It also aimed at investigating the extent to which the principals possess such competencies, as well as possible divergences of these based on gender, qualification and experience variables.

The study sample consisted of 87 headmasters and headmistresses representing 45.3% of the total population (192).

The study used the descriptive method with a survey of 71 items covering seven major areas of the administrative and technical competencies; namely: planning, organization, evaluation, curriculum development, students' management, collaborating with the community and financial affairs.

A number of experts validated the assessment tool, and reliability was proved to be high.

Findings revealed that the administrative and technical competencies applied by principals were moderate.

There were no significant differences that can be attributed to the years of experience variable.

Results also revealed significant differences due to the gender variable in favor of men and due to qualification variable in favor of holders of bachelor and post-bachelor degrees in areas relevant to planning and financial affairs.

The study offers a number of recommendations that are likely to optimize principals’ performance in Najran schools.
