In this research, we seek to consolidate a central and pivotal term in the modern linguistic lesson; the term of the index.

There is no doubt that Tassam Hassan in establishing the foundations of his long theory - the theory of the collaboration of indexes - was based on a long historical background, at the same time he drew from the spring of modern language lesson; therefore, the term index was not strange to the arabic linguistic heritage; it was a common term and widely used in the arabic language environment.

On the other hand, this term has received great attention from contemporary arab and western linguists alike.

Among the most prominent modern linguists who have addressed this term in study and research, we find: Tamam Hassan, Fadhil Saleh al-Samarrai and Diaa al-Din al-Qallash, each of whom dealt with a particular nook.

Therefore, their views differed, as their divisions differed accordingly; both Tammam Hassan and Samarrai did not pay attention to the definition of this term and rooting it, unlike Ziauddin Qallash, who sought in this remarkable effort, but his study was within the framework of the science of meanings, was not subjected to grammatical except what came from that offer.

As for Tammam Hassan, he went on to talk about the subject of indexes, and it is no wonder that he is the author of the theory of " joining of indexes".

Western linguists have been subjected to this term in the context of their study of the sign, so the most prominent of those who took up the study are the Semites: the first: "Charles Sanders Pierce", "Roland Bart," and "Britto."
