Abstract EN

The present study aims at addressing the problems that face translators in translating Arabic present tense into Urdu.

It shows that these problems arise, on the one hand, from the incompatibility between the present tense morphological forms and its syntactic forms in Arabic.

Thus, the tense of a verb varies according to the surrounding entities and context.

On the other hand, they arise from an abundance of morphological forms in Urdu where more than one form represents the same tense.

A translator may face such problems in translating non-Quranic texts.

However, they are more common and difficult in the Glorious Quran, which is open to different interpretations and meanings.

The research concludes that Urdu forms of present tense, future tense, present unconditional tense and present continuous tense are the most problematic forms with regard to translating Arabic present tense, which represent both present and future, into Urdu, because all these Urdu forms express present and future tenses.

Similarly, Urdu forms of the past unconditional tense, recent past tense, old past tense, present unconditional tense and present continuous tense are the most problematic forms with regard to translating Arabic present tense, which represent the past, into Urdu, because all these Urdu forms express the past tense.

The research also concludes that this problem of translating Arabic present tense into Urdu cannot completely resolved, except in rare cases, especially in translating the meanings of the glorious Quran where we have a variety of verb forms and senses resulting from different exegeses.

Thus, one can prefer one translation to the other and both are considered correct translations.
