This study aims at identifying the nature of institutionalized voluntary work in the city of Taiz, the extent of youth participation, the evaluation of this voluntary work by the youth and the role this work plays in society.
The study also aims at diagnosing the impediments to the development of voluntary work in society on the one hand and the impediments to youth participation on the other.
A final aim of the study is to identify the mechanisms to activate voluntary work and increase youth participation in it .
This study is descriptive in nature and aims at giving an accurate description of the components of the study at hand using the descriptive-analytic approach.
The study uses the research tools of social survey, purposive sampling (a sample size of 90) and questionnaires during the period November to May 2010 .
The main conclusions of the study are listed below: 1- Most of the youth participating in institutionalized voluntary work in Taiz city are students, and their participation increases as does their level of education.
The period of their participation in voluntary work ranges between one to four years and is largely restricted to service and social care activities.
This participation is institutionalized in nature, viz.
it is generally weekly participation .
2Y Voluntary work has considerable social significance due to the social roles in plays.
Principally, voluntary work promotes the culture of cooperation and collaboration among community members and enhances patriotism.
It also increases the extent of the participation of the youth in developing their local communities.
Despite this significant role of voluntary work, there are a number of social impediments to its growth and to increase youth participation in voluntary work.
The most important of these are the lack of awareness about institutionalized voluntary work and the overall poor standard of living.
These two factors lead to the emergence of a number of other inhibiting factors notable among which are: the clash between the times of voluntary work and the times of other commitments, the lack of social incentives and the lack of social appreciation of their efforts, which may frustrate these youth and create a suspicion of futility about voluntary work.
However, there are many ways to raise public awareness about the importance of voluntary work and encourage the youth to participate in it, such as heightened media campaigns about the importance of voluntary work.
