Ovarian activity and hormonal profile in she-camel

The present study was conducted on 72 slaughtered female camels.

The ovaries were inspected for their activity in the non-pregnant, pregnant and post-parturient she-camels.

Blood samples were collected before slaughter for determination of oestradiol-17? and progesterone.

A total number of 46 non pregnant female were examined from which 19.66% were found in growing follicular phase, 39.13% in mature follicular phase, 10.87% in atretic phase and 30.34% have no follicular growth.

There was no follicular growth in 70% of examined females (10 animals) during the early post-partum period.

On the other side all examined ovaries showed corpora lutea in one or both ovaries.

Progesterone concentration remained below 1 ng/ml during all follicular phases.

However, the mean plasma oestradiol concentration was increased with follicular growth in non pregnant she-camels.

There was significant increase in plasma oestradiol concentration during pregnancy with sharp drop at the early puerperium.

Plasma progesterone concentration showed a steady increase in early and mid gestation, followed by a decrease in the late gestation, then decreased to the basal level during early post-partum period.
