Abstract EN

The study aimed to find out the trend of infections among neonatal deaths and to determine the frequency and pattern of the infection as causes of neonatal death in relation to sex, residency, gestational age, place of delivery, and birth weight .

The study designed as retrospective charts review of all neonatal death over three years period, 2006-2008, at Al-Wahda Teaching Hospital in Aden .

The frequency of neonatal deaths due to infections is increased from 20.9% in 2006 to 40.5% in 2008 .

The majority of neonates (78.1%) die due to sepsis where they were term & preterm infants and the early neonatal sepsis represents the higher percent (53.5%) of causes of death. The second infection was pneumonia (8.8%).The frequency of infections among males was more common (57.2%).

The neonatal deaths were more common among infants from urban areas (61.8%).

The death cases of full term were (89.3%).The deaths were predominant among neonates whom place of delivery were hospitals (63.2%).

Deaths among neonates with normal weight were more common 116 (54%).

55.8% of neonatal deaths occurred between the 2nd and 7th day of admission followed by deaths occurred at the same day of admission 39.5% and only 4.7% of deaths occurred after 7 days of admission.

We concluded that the majority of neonates died due to sepsis and most of them born at hospitals and from urban area and most of them died within 2 - 7 days of admission.
