Dengue fever outbreak 2008 : clinical profile of patients admitted at Ibn-Khaldoon Hospital in Lahj governorate

The aim of the study was to assess clinical features, disease severity, laboratory findings, and outcome of serologically confirmed cases of dengue fever.

This descriptive study was conducted at Ibn-Kkhaldoon hospital) in Lahj governorate during the epidemic of dengue fever (May – August) 2008.

During this period 95 cases with febrile illness have been seen in outpatient clinic.

35 cases presented with fever since 4-5 days and were hospitalized.

They were 20 (57.2%) males and 15 (42.8%) females.

Regarding 35 hospitalized cases, no specific pattern of fever could be identified.

Abdominal pain was the most common symptom (51.4%).

Only 2 patients complained of body aches and pains.

Platelet count ranged between 50, 000-100,000 cmm, no existing warring sings,HTC within normal values.

Fifteen had mild elevation of SGPT.

All the patients improved over a period of 3-5 days.

As there is variation in the clinical presentation of dengue fever, continuous surveillance and further studies are required to identify the clinical profile of dengue fever.
