Although the prevention of nosocomial infections at the hands of health care providers, still adherence to standard precautions is very low.

This study aimed to assess the nurses and midwives practices regarding standard precautions for infection prevention in MCH Centers and Labor Room at Mukalla City.

Descriptive design was used in this study, 62 Nurses and Midwives were selected by convenient method from MCH centers at Mukalla City and Labor Room at Maternity and child Mukalla Hospital.

A questionnaire was designed and validated by the Researchers and experts then were filled by Nurses and Midwives, from October 2012 to February 2013.

The results of the present study revealed that more than half (58.1%) of the participants were working in health centers compared to (41.9%) were working in the delivery room and the majority (83.9%) of the Nurses and Midwives mentioned not attending inservice training program about infection prevention in the last three years.

More than two thirds (66.1%) of Nurses and Midwives are having inadequate practices about standard precautions and infection prevention measures in MCH Centers and labor room at Mukalla City compared to only (33.9%) of them having adequate practices.

Clear written policy and procedure about standard precautions and how to deal with infection prevention issues should be available at the health centers and labor rooms and reviewed periodically, in-service training programs should be implemented yearly to update the knowledge and motivate implementation of infection prevention practices, establishing effective system of supervision and monitoring the practices of standard precautions.
