This study aimed to find out the histopathological patterns of ovarian neoplasms and their age distribution in Al- Mukalla district, Hadhramout governorate, Yemen.
This is a retrospective descriptive study included all ovarian tumor cases, registered in National Oncology Center Hadhramout, and medical laboratories in Al-Mukalla district from January 2008 to December 2012.Out of 348 ovarian specimens, (62.4%) were ovarian neoplasms while 37.6% were non-neoplastic lesions.
Benign tumors (82.5%) were more common than borderline (3.7%) and malignant ones (13.8%).
Surface epithelial neoplasms were the most common (57.6%), followed by germ cell (10.6%) then sex cordstromal (31.8%).
Serous cystadenoma was the most common of all benign serous tumors (77/93; 82.8%) and serous cystadenocarcinoma (14%) was the most common malignant of the same class.
The most common ovarian neoplasm in the age group less than 20 years was surface epithelial tumors (53.1%) followed by germ cell tumor (46.9%).
In age group 20-40 years, benign tumors were more common (104cases) than malignant ones (21cases).
Most malignant ovarian tumors (21/ 30cases) were in the age group above of 40 years.
We conclude that the benign ovarian neoplasms are more common than malignant ones.
Serous cystadenoma is the most common benign ovarian neoplasm and serous cystadenocarcinoma is the commonest malignant neoplasm.
Most benign ovarian neoplasms are found in patients with age group less than 40 years, while most malignant ovarian neoplasms are found in the age group > 40 years.
