Abstract EN

The article aims to discuss the extent of Algerian State attributions and sovereign rights over the exclusive economic zone established in 2018, given the peculiarity of the geographical nature of the Mediterranean and the successor to the demarcation of the maritime borders of the region from the overlap of the Algerian exclusive economic zone with the regions of neighboring countries, especially Spain and Italy.

In this context, it was necessary to examine the history of the expansion of the Algerian state at sea, taking into account the rights of neighboring countries in this regard, the conflict that may ensue and the extent of the possibility of resolving them in accordance with the rules of international law, and given the previous experiences of states in this regard.

Therefore, it was necessary to examine the stances of the various countries of the Mediterranean region regarding the idea of the exclusive economic zone, as the establishment of Algeria's EEZ came relatively late, but one of its raisons was that the coastal countries accelerated the exercise of their legally and internationally established powers and sovereign rights due to their desire In the exploitation of marine living and non-living resources, in the Mediterranean, including hydrocarbons in the sea, whose exploitation becomes possible thanks to the development of technology and the efforts of the hydrocarbon-consuming countries to reduce their dependence on the producing countries.

Therefore, it was imperative for Algeria to develop a future vision regarding the extent of exercising its sovereign rights in the exclusive economic zone and translating it into its internal laws, especially with regard to the exploitation of maritime living and non living resources such hydrocarbons at sea within the framework of sustainable development.
