EFL university students' awareness of noun and prepositional phrases: structures and syntactic functions

This study has been presented by Arwa Luay Abdulkhaleq at Mosul University/ College of Basic Education/ Department of English.

As an essential element of English grammar, this research tackles the concept of the noun phrase henceforth(NP) and the prepositional phrase henceforth(PP) in the English sentence.

In this regard, the present paper aims at investigating whether the EFL university students in the Department of English/ College of Basic Education/ University of Mosul fully master the structures and syntactic functions of the NPs and PPs or not.

The research hypothesizes that the EFL university students do not fully master the structures and syntactic functions of the NPs and PPs.

It also hypothesizes that there are some noun and PPs structures and some NPs and PPs syntactic functions more easily identified than others.

As a data collection procedure, a questionnaire has been conducted by the researcher to verify these hypotheses by measuring the noun, and PPs command of 60 students as a sample for the research.

The results indicate that the participants are not fully master the NPs and PPs structures and syntactic functions.

Furthermore, there are some NPs and PPs structures and syntactic functions better mastered than others.

Hence, the lack of knowledge and the negligence of English phrases are the direct causes of such a weakness that need to be solved.
