The aim of this paper is to bring more clarity to the real nature of the adaptation concept, which has long been perceived as only a form of rewriting or an imitation of the original.

the study is mainly focusing on the different forms that adaptation could take as a global strategy in the specific field of audiovisual translation, more precisely in the transfer of documentary films, a practice which goes beyond the simple technique of translation, generally used in specific cases.

hence, an overview of the concept will be provided to determine its definition, and so a scheme demonstrating how could adaptation be applied as a strategy in translating audiovisual texts, principally in translating documentaries.
