The co-existence of elements of existentialism and transcendentalism in selected poems by Emily Dickinson

Abstract EN

This study aims to show how could the American poetess Emily Dickinson succeed to converge and diverge between the philosophical controversial in selected poems.

In spite the fact that Emily Elizabeth Dickinson lived during the 19thcentury Amherst among conservative community that gave less chance to female voice to gain a share in social and political life, she paved the way for the coming female thinkers to obtain more freedom of thought and expression.

In other words, since she was convient that 'Abdiction of Belief makes the Behaviour Small' she undercut social conventions and moved under gradual shift from Orthodox Trinitarianism into new thoughts of liberalism.

However, in good deal of her work, she still pertains to religious conservatism in wider sense than Amhest Church had been dectated.

Cette étude vise à montrer comment la poétesse américaine Emily Dickinson pourrait réussir à converger et à diverger entre les controverses philosophiques contenues dans des poèmes sélectionnés.

Malgré le fait qu'Emily Elizabeth Dickinson ait vécu au XIXe siècle à Amherst dans une communauté conservatrice qui donnait moins de chances à la voix féminine de prendre une part à la vie sociale et politique, elle a ouvert la voie aux futures penseurs pour obtenir plus de liberté de pensée et d'expression.

En d'autres termes, puisqu'elle convenait que «la prohibition de la croyance rend le comportement petit», elle saperait les conventions sociales et passerait progressivement du trinitarisme orthodoxe à une nouvelle conception du libéralisme.

Cependant, dans bon nombre de ses travaux, elle relève toujours du conservatisme religieux au sens plus large que celui de l'Église Amhest.
