The structural and geological history of Iraq made it of a nature that possesses metal resources, Iraq is between two major structural units; the Alps fold and the Arabic shelf, and these units left reflections on the nature of formed metals such as: mines and quarries which are considered of the economical and trading activities in Iraq and are distributed in all its governorates.

The relative significance of these activities in current prices reached 4.05% and in fixed prices 3.96% of the total local product according to the economic activities.

Phosphate is distributed over Akashat area in Al Anbar governorate with total certain reserve of 430 million tons and in Al Sawab as well, with a certain reserve of 3502.9 million tons.

Sulphur is found at Al Mishraq fields south of Mosul with a reserve of 320 million tons, sedimentary iron at Rutba and at Al husainiyyat Al Ga'arah with a reserve of 80 million tons, salts in different areas in Iraq with different thicknesses and distributions such as in Himreen well, Fao, Al Samawa, Al Jazeera desert and the two districts of Al Hadar and Al Ba'aaj, the two districts of Al Dour and other Iraqi governorates.
