Based on the German thinker Ernst Cassirer's conception, his philosophy of symbolic forms in general, and on his perspective on the artistic works and its value for man and its place in his symbolic world in particular, this article discusses the issue of art in relation to its nature and function.

To this effect, this article tackles the problem of art and its symbolic dimensions in three main axes: 1.

Art is a symbolic form; 2.

The symbolic nature of art and the production of artistic symbols; 3.

The function of art and its role in the construction of the human world.
