يعتبر عمل أهل المدينة من الأصول التي اشتهر بها المذهب المالكي حتى غالى بعضهم في ذلك مما جر على المذهب انتقادات كثيرة إلا أن المحققين من علماء المذهب كالقاضي عياض و الباجي و القاضي عبد الوهاب وغيرهم بينوا بأن الأمر ليس على إطلاقه وأن عمل أهل المدينة على مراتب منها ما هو حجة و منها ما لا يعد كذلك.
