Abstract EN

The study aimed to identify the level of leadership behavior practiced by the heads of departments at Taibah University and to identify the differences between the responses of the sample members according to the study variables.

The sample consisted of 221 participants randomly selected from a population of 1,795 members.

A survey questionnaire consisting of 27 items, divided into three domains, was administered to the sample.

The results showed that the level of leadership behavior practiced by the department heads at Taibah University on the tool as a whole and its three fields (commitment to career, administrative empowerment, future vision) was high.The study revealed that there are differences between responses of faculty member and lecturer, based on current job, favoring faculty member; and between Associate Professor and the lecturer based on Academic Rank, favoring Associate Professor; and between Male and female responses to empowerment domain, favoring male; and between scientific and medical colleges to future vision and empowerment domains, favoring medical colleges; However, the results did not reveal differences between the male and female responses on the field of future vision and current job.

The study presented recommendations on the selection of departments heads, from the leaders whom they have future aspirations, knowledgeable of the work areas in the academic departments.

And the adoption of functional experience and academic rank, as preliminary indicators for the leadership positions in Universities.
