Abstract EN

Objective : To study the effects of the oral hormonal contraceptive Lo-femenal on the periodontium.

Methods : This study includes 155 women who were using Lo-femenal as the study group.

Two hundred women who never used contraceptives were assigned to the control group.

Both groups were clinically examined for plaque levels, gingival condition and loss of periodontal attachment.

A structured questionnaire designed for the purpose of this study was filled out for each woman.

Results : Gingival index was significantly higher among contraceptive users than non-users (P<0.05), which was correlated with the duration of usage (r = 0.8).

Loss of attachment was significantly higher among users of contraceptives for more than two years, while no significant difference in plaque index was found between both groups.

Conclusion : The use of contraceptive pills Lo-femenal for a long period increases the likelihood of gingival inflammation and loss of attachment.
