Abstract EN

Using figurative language in literary texts has got a powerful effect on the adroitness of the creation of texts.

The present paper tries to shed light on the effect of the usage of synecdoche as one of the figures of speech in a short story written by William Faulkner, entitled "A Rose for Emily".

The aim of the study is to study the types, meanings and functions of synecdoche, then show the impact of their presence in the story.

The analysis conducted throughout the study shows the different effects of the use of synecdoche in the five parts of the story.

The problem of the study is to understand the diverse usages of synecdoche in the literary text and the impacts created by their use.

Then, the analysis tries to discover the relation between the synecdochical words and their actual meanings.

It is hypothesized that the use of synecdoche enriched the story and enhanced its rhetorical effects and implications.

It is concluded that there are so many types of synecdoche and it is used differently and adroitly by Faulkner in order to create a better piece of work.

Faulkner is using synecdoche with its different types according to his stylistic requirements.

The study is divided into two parts.

The first part is a theoretical part.

It deals with the definitions and meanings of synecdoche.

It is followed by a comparison drawn between synecdoche and metonymy.

The study ends up with some conclusions that sums up the findings of the study.
