Abstract EN

Objective: To evaluate the clinical use of bupropion (Zyban®) as an aid for smoking cessation in the first year post marketing in Bradford area, United Kingdom. Methods: A Piloted questionnaire was sent to 102 bupropion clients in the Bradford area who were randomly selected from the entire computer list of 699 bupropion clients from the community service directorate at Leeds Road Hospital in Bradford city.

Fifty-seven questionnaires were returned and included in this study. Results: The results showed that 63% of participant; bupropion clients had given up smoking after treatment.

Family advice and support significantly enhanced the cessation rate with bupropion treatment (P<0.05).

Although the vast majority of respondents in this study claimed to be highly dependent on nicotine, almost all of them were highly motivated and received advice and support to quit smoking and therefore, this may have had an impact in enhancing the success rate achieved by clients. Forty (70.2%) respondents had one or more adverse events.

The most commonly reported adverse events were insomnia, headache, and dry mouth. Conclusion: Treatment with sustained-release form of bupropion (Zyban®) is an effective aid for smoking cessation.

Bupropion was well tolerated by respondents.
