This paper deals with a lexical item and its derivatives in Arabic according to its use in the Quranic text, i.

e.

'going astray' and its derivatives and the views of the exegetes on its meanings.

The study reveals that this lexeme is used in various meanings in the Quranic text based on its usage in the Arabic tongue.

The paper is composed of an introduction, seven sections, a conclusion including the findings, and a list of references.

The lexeme 'going astray' has several meanings in the Holy Quran including disbelief, disobedience, away from the truth, unawareness, loss, perdition, mistake and forgetfulness, as well as ignorance and voidance.

The main findings of the study include tracing the existence of the above meanings in the Holy Quran; these meanings are typical of the Arabic tongue, as well as disagreement among the exegetes concerning the meaning of the lexeme in a specific verse.
