Abstract EN

This paper examines the dualist attitude and approach of Tunisian society toward the wide use of alcohol.

On the one hand, this society allows its citizens to have access to alcoholic drinks in public places.

On the other, it prohibits Tunisians from doing that in public places on Friday, in the month of Ramadan and at certain periods of the rest of days and nights of the week.

This dualist attitude is the outcome of two cultural systems: a Western one of colonial roots and the other of Islamic nature.

The study shows that this type of attitude makes Tunisian society unable to adopt efficient social policies that deal with problems resulting from uses and abuses of alcohol.
