Climate change is a global issue that needs financing, many international efforts have been made to design mechanisms that would finance adaptation and mitigate its effects.

These mechanisms include carbon markets, so this paper aims to highlight the role that both mandatory and voluntary carbon markets play in financing climate change and reducing CO2 emissions.

The study concluded that despite the novelty of the carbon markets, the low volume of emissions covered, and the targets have not been reached under international agreement, carbon markets have significantly reduced emissions through carbon pricing and its initiatives; mainly carbon taxes and instruments used under the emissions trading system.
