With the objective of improving efficacy and morbidity, device manufacturers incorporate chemicals or drugs into medical implants.
Using multiple reservoirs of discrete drug doses, microchips represent a new technology capable of on-demand release of various drugs over long periods of time.
Herein, we review drug delivery systems, how microchips work, recent investigations, and future applications in various fields of medicine.
