Abstract EN

The present study examines a medical manuscript dated in Rabi'I 902 HA (1497 AD), which the researcher reviewed in a Spanish Library.

The manuscript is a kind of a legal permit to practice medicine based on certain the criteria put forward by the Andalusians to practice this important profession.

The manuscript seems more like a certificate of expertise for the medical practitioner, Abu al- Hassan Ali bin Muhammed bin Muslim of Granada.

The Manuscript includes the names of the witnesses who testified to his expertise in treating different medical conditions.

These testimonies were legally registered by the notary public of al-Bayazeen Quarter in Granada, who was known as Muhammed bin Yahya al-Haj.

The writer included in the prelude of the manuscript a brief introduction of the medical practitioner, focusing on his knowledge of treating a number of diseases.

The manuscript listed the diseases this practitioner was good at treating, which included fractures, sciatica and chickenpox along with some other diseases.

The document also registered testimonies made by 43 of his patients, whose names were mentioned in full in order to solidify his reputation.

Some of the testimonies highlighted the inabilities of other medical practitioners in treating some diseases, which were successfully treated by this person.

This is considered as a form of guarantee to reassure the public of his knowledge and as an official granting of permit to practice this profession.

This document introduces a form of practical test embodied by the previous patients’ testimonies.

The writers of the manuscript, whose name was Yahya al-Nayar, also made a testimony as to how professional this medical practitioner was.

The name of the second writer (Muhammad al-Basti), who wrote the side paragraphs, was also written at the bottom of manuscript.

It seems that the second writer added his part in the manuscript after the first parts had been written, as he registered that this medical practitioner had, and still was practicing the profession.
