This paper undertakes a critical examination of NGOs in the Arabian Gulf through a broader study of the role and development of NGOs in the developing world.

In its focus on such organizations in the Arabian Gulf, the paper probes the work of five kinds of NGOs: (1) benevolent religious organizations, (2) womens organizations, (3) organizations that represent specific professions and fields of expertise, (4) cultural organizations, and (5) organizations that address special needs (e.g., cancer, diabetes, or needs of the elderly).

Through its examinations of these various types of NGOs, the |>aper assesses the challenges and difficulties those organizations face.
