English Abstract

Viral hepatitis type B and C is serious public health problem and still remain to be the major causes of chronic hepatitis.

Screening blood widely used and necessary to prevent several blood borne viral infection among general population especially in blood donations, before surgery and before marry.

This study aims to determine the infection rate of hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses among couples who are to marry in Baqubah city.

A cross-sectional study was conducted on all couples planning to marry and attended to Baqubah Teaching Hospital- Blood bunk, Iraq, during the period from first of January 2017 till end of December 2017.

All subjects were tested for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and hepatitis C antibodies by use enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Data of this study showed that infection rate was 23.39% for HBV and 16.91% for HCV.

The HBV infection was high in July, August, September and November while HCV infection was appeared high in February, May and August.

Infection rate was more common in males 54 (73.97% ) and 20 (86.95% ) respectively than females 19(26.02% ) and 3(13.05% ) respectively and statistically significant.

Infection rates of HBV and HCV showed high percentage in age group of (21-30) years; followed by (16-20) years and (31-40) years respectively and statistically appeared highly significant.

Hepatitis B virus had a relatively higher percentage than HCV, infection more common in males and reproductive age group; these common sexually transmit infections share common mode of transmission that induce economical and psychological outcome.
