تتناول الدراسة مشكلة البحث عن تحقيق الهوية هي ليست وليدة اليوم لكنها ظاهرة قديمة.
تشرح الدراسة كيفية البحث و تحقيق الهوية و أيضا المراحل المتتالية التي اتبعها كل من بطلي الروايتين لإيجاد هويتهم الحقيقية كما تذكر الدراسة أسباب الشعور بانعدام الشخصية الفعلي و تذكر منها الحالة الاقتصادية للعوائل الأفريقية – الأمريكية و الخدمة اللون وأن تكون من أصول أفريقية كذلك تشرح كيف تؤثر كل هذه العوامل على تصرفات الأمريكيين - الأفريقيين.
