Abstract EN
This is an investigation of the evolution and development of language and how it branched into dialects and accents, with illustrations from Arabic and English, the interactions between language and culture and how both are mediated by awareness and cognition.
In its narrowest sense, language is the primary means of human communication.
Following Ibn Jinni (932-1002 AD) in his book Al-KhaSaa'is, it is the set of sounds that members of a community use to communicate their needs and wants.
Broadly speaking, language is every means of communication amongst humans – verbal or non-verbal.
Culture, on the other hand, is the environment where language grows; language also carries culture and communicates it.
It is cognition that mediates between language and culture, between the word/ text and the world.
