Agriculture depends mainly on both types of irrigation where natural and artificial, there are many references to irrigation machines used to lift water to higher lands.

This research discusses one of the crafts related to the repairing and maintenanly of irrigation machines, which is the mechanarius in Egypt during the Roman era, where there are many references to this craft in papyri during that era, and it continued to exist during the Byzantine era.

The research mentioned the start of this craft and the reasons of it's existence, then it reviewed the linguistic and idiomatic meaning of the word mechanarius.

Then it moved to the most important tasks and duties of mechanarius which related to the repair and maintenance of irrigation machines specially water wheels, it ends with discssing the social and economic conditions of the mechanarius during the Roman era.
