Anxiety in EFL learning : a case study of secondary school students in the state of Kuwait

This research paper sheds light on anxiety in an EFL environment in Kuwait public schools, State of Kuwait.

One hundred eighty students (92 males and 88 females) took part in this study.

After identifying their level of anxiety based upon the total score in Language Anxiety Score, students were classified into three levels: the first category Highest Level of Anxiety students (HLA) scored as high as 14.1%; the Moderate Level of Anxiety students was 17.5%; while the Lowest Level of Anxiety students reached 68.4%.

Students’ responses to a questionnaire on learning English revealed that the Highest Level of Anxiety students were more unlikely to exert extra efforts to enhance their language proficiency compared with the Lowest Level of Anxiety students
