Abstract EN

Arabs, in the past, gave high interest to their dictionary industry.

They took great care and art in their classification and indexation.

The methods of compiling the Arabic dictionaries have varied to the extent that they have almost exhausted all possibilities in this respect.

Dictionary compilers were logical in that they distinguished two aspects in the word: the form and the meaning.

Therefore, they compiled their dictionaries in general either according to form or to meaning.

In the lexicographical work, vocabulary rather than structure has special significance, and that is why the concept of origin and branch concerns meaning alone.

After consulting Kitabo Al-Jaratheem by Ibn Kutaybah (276 H), the researcher understands that each lexicographical unit has, on one side, several meanings and is associated in one meaning with other units, on the other side.

It is also understood from Ibn Fares’ (395 H) attitude in his dictionary “ Al - Maqayis” that Arabic vocabulary has origins and significance which also give way to branches.
