The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different finishing/polishing systems on the surface roughness of a silorane -based composite and to compare it with a methacrylate-based composite.
Materials and Methods: 60 cylindrical discs were prepared using a Teflon mold (5mm diameter,2mm height) of one silorane- based composite (Filtek P90-3M ESPE) and one methacrylate-based composite (Filtek Z250XT-3M ESPE), 30 specimens of each, and were light cured ( Elipar -3M ESPE -1000 mw/cm2 - 20 seconds).
Specimens were stored in 37o distilled water for 24h.
Each material group was divided into 3 subgroups (n=10) according to the finishing /polishing system used (Sof-lex XT Discs- 3M ESPE), (Sof-lex- Spiral Wheels- 3M ESPE) and (Astropol-Ivoclar Vivadent).
Surface roughness was measured by TR200 hand-held roughness tester.
Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni Post-Hoc and T Student tests at significance level (P<0.05).
Results: No significant differences were found in values between finishing/polishing systems in silorane-based composite group P90 (P=0.725).
In methacrylate-based composite Z250XT group, Sof-lex XT showed the lowest values with significant differences when compared with Astropol and Spiral Wheels (P=0.000).
No significant differences were found between composites in Sof-lex XT finishing/polishing system (P=0.732), while values in silorane- based composite P90 were lower than in methacrylate-based composite Z250XT with significant differences in both Astropol and Spiral Wheels finishing/polishing systems (P=0.000).
Conclusions: Surface roughness of silorane composite wasn't affected by the finishing/polishing system, and the polishing action of Sof-lex XT Discs wasn't influenced by the composite type used in this study.
