Abstract EN

MWRI has implemented various projects with supports from development partners for improving efficiency of water use through establishing and strengthening Water Users’ Organizations (WUOs).

JICA has also supported the advancement of the farmers’ participation in water management in Egypt since 2001based on the rich experiences in the long history of water management by WUOs in Japan.

Through the efforts of those projects, efficiency of water use and the increase in agricultural production were confirmed in the pilot sites by enhancing the ownership of farmers for irrigation facilities management. There fore, the Governments of Egypt and Japan decided to start the Project for Strengthening Water Management Transfer (SWMT Project) to promote water management transfer (WMT) nationwide in the level of branch canals.

SWMT Project was implemented from November 2012 to March 2016 with the aim to clarify the methodology for WMT to the Branch Canal Water Users’ Associations (BCWUAs), to establish training system for the staff in MWRI and BCWUA members, and to develop a Roadmap for nationwide dissemination of WMT.

After completion of the SWMT Project, MWRI has started its new efforts to disseminate WMT nationwide along the Roadmap.

This paper introduces the outcomes and the characteristics of Japanese projects for WMT in Egypt..
