The present paper introduce some of the most important and most applicable theories of politeness, it also gives a detailed definition of the term politeness and it goes back to the origin of the theory of politeness, the main works on linguistic politeness.

It also sheds the light on Brown and Levinson's (1987) model of politeness and the criticisms it faces and gives some studies on the application of politeness to literary texts.
