Adopting a non-numerical method in selecting the construction type of pile

Abstract EN

In this paper, a soft computing method has been used as a tool to find the suitable construction type of pile for a given site with known characteristics.

The technique is Fuzzy Set theory (FST).

Fuzzy sets are sets whose elements have degrees of membership.

Fuzzy sets generalize classical sets, since the indicator functions of classical sets are special cases of the membership functions of fuzzy sets, if the latter only take values 0 or 1.

Classical bivalent sets are in fuzzy set theory usually called crisp sets.

The fuzzy set theory can be used in a wide range of domains in which information is incomplete or imprecise.

In this paper, a set of 24 fuzzy variables, covering 6 main subgroups is used in the current analysis.

The proposed development is implemented using a total of (120) projects, which has been collected from major consulting offices in Egypt.

An interactive, structured, C++ 3.5 computer program is prepared for the analysis.

The software was programmed on Microsoft Visual Studio 2009, and the reports were designed by Microsoft reporting system.

A parametric study is also performed.

The results are logical, useful and can be easily utilized by geotechnical engineers to help them select the suitable construction type of pile.
