Abstract EN

This study aimed to demonstrate the opportunity costs involved in generalized energy subsidies in Algeria, which limit investments in high-value areas such as health and education, by comparing the cost of subsidizing energy products with government spending for both health and education.

The study concluded that the energy subsidy system in Algeria carries a high cost crowding out priority areas of spending such as health and education.

And that the trend towards gradual lifting of subsidies will lead to the release of huge financial resources.

If these resources are spent in order to promote investment in human capital, they will benefit the weaker strata of society more than what energy subsidies do to these groups
