Pratiques linguistiques des jeunes étudiants du département de Français à l’université de Mascara : entre variation situationnelle et compétence

The department of French in Mascara is a space favorable to language contact that allows students to communicate in various situations.

Either by addressing a teacher during the class session, or asking the same teacher for information outside the class, or speaking with an administration officer, or even talking to other students, etc.

constitute the situations in which a student may find himself/herself and where he has to appropriate a language: Arabic dialect, French, Tamazight (for a small group of Berbers peaking community living in Mascara) or even Bambara for Malian students Our paper gives an account of the different communication situations where the student has to choose a language or a variety of a language among others to convey/vehicle his/her message, leading to a possible redefinition of the notions of competence in an Algerian context
