Abstract EN

The aims of this study is to investigate the effect of using multimedia in teaching_learning new words for Iraqi students.

To achieve the aim of present study, the following hypothesis has been used: There is no statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group who was taught vocabulary through using multimedia and that of the control group who was taught according to the traditional way in the post test in teaching vocabulary.

The present study is limited for second students year in Basic Educational College/ English Department/Diyala University for the academic year 2017-2018.

The sample of this study consists of 40 students as experimental group and 41 as the control group.

It is ensured that the two groups are equal through a statistical manipulation of a number of variables such as age, education, parents, achievement scores in English in the previous year, and the achievement scores on the pretest.

Pre and post tests are designed, and the validity of the tests and the lesson plans have been obtained by exposing them to jury members in the fields of EFL and linguistics.

The test is done after teaching new words to each group separately for three months (from February- March- April ) reliability of the test has been secured by using t-test formula to measure the difference between the performance of the experimental group in the pre and posttest.

Statistical analysis of data achieved through the test indicates that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the two groups in favor of the experimental group in the post test.

The researcher concludes that using multimedia in learning new words is proven to be more fruitful and effective in promoting the students' storage and relation of learning new words and give them more opportunities than those in the textbook to store and retain or retrieve easily what has been taught or learned.

The researcher suggests using this technique for other subject
