Abstract EN

Monuments either fixed or those inherited from various successive civilizations from prehistoric times up to the present day are considered as a significant cultural heritage, considering their civilizational, artistic and architectural values, in addition to their role for transferring the values and communication between previous nations and the present, as it may contribute to strengthening the national identity.

These monuments are subjected to different protection systems according to their nature.

Monuments and Historic buildings are particularly exposed to environmental fluctuations, theft, and looting, in addition to illegal digging, which in turn results in severe damage to them.

Therefore, the preservation of ancient and historical buildings has received a huge intention from scholars, local communities, governments and international organizations to achieve the greatest possible benefit.

The historical buildings and monuments are not far from the armed conflicts occurred in some unstable countries (e,g, Libya), since it can directly affect the cultural heritage and it may be exposed to many potential risks such as vandalism, theft and encroachments, especially during armed conflicts.

Thus, it is our responsibility as a scholar to take an intensive care to confront such potential risks.

The research will explain the relevant laws, the use of modern technologies in the process of documentation and preservation of monuments and historical buildings in the old city of Tripoli (in Libya), and the impact of the conflict on them.
