Abstract EN

'Karbala' is an ancient name in history dating back to the Babylonian era as there are severalBabylonian villages called 'Core of Babylon'.

This research presents several opinions and viewpoints of linguists collected from dictionariesand resources.

'Karbala' means laxity which was called alkarbala.

Karbal is the name ofthe acid plant.

Its land was pure of gravel and dung.

It was said to be derived from distress andgrief.

When Imam Al-Hussein (peace be upon them) arrived there, he said: "It is a land of painand affliction".

Some linguists have pointed out that 'Karbala' is a name of a place, a Persiannot a purely Arab name.

This research highlights the interest of the poets in documenting the name of Karbala and itsperpetuation after the painful incident of Imam Al-Hussein (peace be upon him), when his sons, brothers, cousins and companions were murdered on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) in 61 AH/681 AD.

The research is supported by a number of poems written by poets who documentedthat battle and it reviews a number of literary resources in order to document the contents of thepoems in this regard.
