Attitudes and perception of the role of wasta in the professional life gulf residents

The use of the influence of other individuals to accomplish what one cannot accomplish by one's self is an important part of the human social and business fabric.

In the Gulf region, the role of wasta may be to intercede on the behalf of another in order to gain special consideration.

The intent of this study was to determine how this age-old practice impacts today's professionals.

Results of the study indicate that intercessory wasta remains a pervasive factor in both personal and professional settings.

While respondents indicated they believed that wasta had a negative effect on society in general, less than half were prepared to take a position opposing the use of wasta, taking the position that it would depend on the circumstances.
