Abstract EN

This study constitutes one of the historical stations in the Tunisian-Maghreb and regional relations, and specifically the coup attempt that took place on the night of January 27, 1980 in the Tunisian city of Gafsa by a group of Tunisian rebels affiliated with the ancient Yusufians under the ban of the Progressive Front that was established in Libya with the aim of overthrowing the Bourguiba’s regime.

This attempt was supported by logistical support from the inside, due to the nature of the totalitarian political system and the poor development model adopted by the Bourguiba’s regime.

And from the outside, because of the latter’s pro-Western orientations and intersecting with regional trends based on unity and Arab nationalism, which made the Bourguiba’s regime in regional isolation that ended with the failure of the coup attempt, which prompted it to search for a new strategy to reposition itself in the network of Maghreb alliances in particular.
