“O Believers! Expend in Allah’s way the best portion of the wealth you have earned and of what we have produced for you from the earth.” Surat Al-Imran (2: 267) This can be a simple and accurate answer to Umma in general and the Senegalese people in particular on their question “why the Institution of zakah should be revive?”, howeverer, we choose to answer this question through a justification that this Institution is for the benefit of each one of us.

Therefore, a serious study is needed in order to come out with good argument and a solution to this disaster known as poverty that is threatening our development since thousands of years.

This paper will seeks to examine the Institution of zakah, its understanding derive from the Qur’an, sunnah and ijma, and its modus operandi through a brief overview of that third pil¬lar of Islam.

In the second level we will talk about the case study of Senegal with the expected amount to be collected within five years plan and its contribution to alleviate poverty, before analyzing challenges to be face in the process and the reforms needed for a smooth collection and dis¬bursement of the huge amount expected.

Then, we will close this paper with our conclusion and recommendations, hoping that this study will contribute in assisting researchers and who involved in fighting poverty in the world in general and Senegal in particular
