Abstract EN

This study attempts to reveal the most affecting and influential factors behind the increase of political violence phenomenon in the Egyptian society during the current period.

It is a qualitative study; with a sample of 50 members from Islamic Group organizations against whom judicial sentences have been passed, and are spending their term of sentence in punitive institutions inside the State.

An in-depth interview guide has been used as a tool for collecting the data.

Among the significant findings reached by the study is the dominance of political factors over social factors regarding the increase of political violence phenomenon in the Egyptian society, whereas the State or the political regime are deemed the main motivators behind political violence committed by the Islamic Group Organization, aiming to change and reform the State.

Moreover, the study reveals the influence of peer groups to join such organizations as a factor dominating over domestic factors.

The study does not deny the influence of the family on its members to join political violence groups, however it is considered a secondary factor that cannot be compared to external factors, such as political regime, organization members, and peer groups.

These findings are in consistency with the literature on political violence and some of the field studies conducted in that matter.
