Abstract EN

This study addresses the issue of Islam and Muslims in Spain and how the Spanish state manages religious diversity.

After presenting the issue in relation to migration, we try to analyze the close relationship between Islam and Spain from the arrival of Islam to al-Andalus (711) until today (2019).

We also discuss religious freedom and belief in the Spanish legal framework since the ratification in 1967 of the first Spanish law that recognizes freedom of belief and regulates freedom of worship and state relations with all religions.

We also studY and analyze the reality of Muslims and Islam in Spain.

In view of its close relationship to the subject of our research, we have allocated an important space to the problem of integration and coexistence and its obstacles.

The study reached several results and recommendations aimed at building bridges of rapprochement, understanding, dialogue and coexistence between Muslims and other religions and cultures in Spain, among them: • Adopting educational measures in coordination with civil society associations and voluntary organizations to combat and eradicate discrimination, racist rhetoric and hate crimes against Muslims.

• Reclaiming the historical past of Spain, while highlighting the contribution of Islam as a culture and as a civilization to the progress of Spain and Europe, and across them, all humanity.

• Motivating and encouraging «cultural diplomacy» projects and initiatives between Spain and the Arab-Islamic countries with the aim of introducing Spanish citizens to Muslims, Islam, people, culture and civilization.

• Organizing Muslim associations in Spain and their unions to raise awareness and sensitization campaigns for Spanish Muslims of immigrant background on the importance of co-existence with other religions and cultures in Spain, as well as supervising training sessions for imams of mosques, starting with teaching them the Spanish language and reminding them of the importance and value of coexistence in Islam, then training them in areas related to respecting religious diversity and avoiding discourse that incites violence and hatred.
