Abstract EN

The key aim of this study is to identify how effective are punitive measures in reducing behaviors conducive of road accidents.

With this end in view, a survey was administered to a random sample of 500 motorists in Riyadh City to collect required information.

The sample represented the various demographic characteristics of study population, and a host of significant findings were reached, major among them were the following: survey respondents were fully aware of traffic rules, and that punitive measures had a limited impact on changing behaviors giving rise to road accidents although such measures caused traffic violations to decline.

Findings have also shown that most of survey respondents stick to traffic safety measures only at checkpoints; on roads monitored by surveillance cameras or in the presence of a law enforcement entity.

Study recommended that all community institutions team up to disseminate a culture of law- abidance among community members.
