Abstract EN

The research borrows the concept of “class differentiation” from sociology to apply it to the field of literary criticism, and proposes the term “literary class differentiation” as a representation of class differentiation and a literary phenomenon that has a social dimension.

The research uses this term to examine the nature of the literary relationship between the upper and lower cultural classes in ancient Arab society.

It also aims at explaining how the literary critics of the upper cultural class set rules and regulations that distinguish their literature from that of the lower class and how they have a different concept of literary communication from lower class people.

On the other hand, the research shows how people of the lower cultural class used to interact with literature of the upper cultural class in their way by accepting what meets their literary standards, refusing what violated their standers, and changing some of that literature to meet those standards.

The research discusses the most important reasons for this class differentiation in critical and literary discourse and the nature of the impact that this form of differentiation has had on poets of the upper cultural class and their poetic texts alike.
