The literary fight which happened in Najaf at the end of the eighteenth century had a great role in the development of the Iraqi poetry due to different reasons : the initiative led by a group of religious schools leaders to enrich the Arabic poetry , support the poets , and start a new wave of poetry by breaking the religious , social and cultural taboos .

That literary fight was the first to be held in Najaf during the middle period and it was led by two prominent Hawza leaders : Mohammed Mahdi Bahr Al Olom and Shekh Jaafar kashif Ghuta and a collection of other scholars .

The subject of the fight - which used improvised poetry - was the intention to win a third member .

That fight represented a major turning point in the support of the rich and intellectual families and a motive to write poetry tackling new ideas .

It is important to mention that the poetry of the fight had the rhetorical features of the poetry of the middle age .
