Analysis of cerebrovascular accidents at prince hashem hospital, jordan

Abstract EN

Objective: To identify risk factors for cerebrovascular accidents in patients (at Zarqa city – Jordan) and to point out the significance of stroke and risk factors in the population.

Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 206 Jordanian patients with a male to female ratio of 2.2:1 who were admitted through the Emergency and the Outpatient Department, between January 1999 and May 2000.

Each patient was assessed by the medical resident and by one of the four internists.

All patients studied fulfilled the criteria for stroke.

Results: The relative frequencies of stroke subtypes were ischemic stroke (82%), and hemorrhagic stroke (18%).

The most common risk factors were concomitant hypertension with diabetes mellitus (37.2%), hypertension alone (21.3%), diabetes alone (18%), smoking (11.1%), and cardiac factors (9.7%).

No risk factor was detected in (2.9%) of the patients.

The overall in-hospital mortality was 22.8%.

Conclusion: This analysis demonstrated that stroke was a common neurological condition in Zarqa city.

Hypertension with diabetes constituted a potent risk factor.

The case fatality rate was similar to that observed in other parts of the world.
